Hunter Celeste Hill

Hunter Celeste Hill was born in 1995 in a small town in North Carolina, USA. She now works as an Art Educa- tor, teaching high school students in Suzhou, China. Hill has always enjoyed Mondrian’s work and has always felt inspired by his work for its logical lines and blocks of primary colors. Primarily, Hill is a sculpture artist, which is why she is generally drawn toward logi- cal settings in art. Not only do the paintings combine both geometry and abstract expressionism, the works purposefully have an obtuse perspective when on dis- play. The two main elements of the works, when com- bined, creates a sense of unbalance, a sense of being off center.

I believe I did my first painting in high school only because I had to. It was not a medium I was drawn to as a creative outlet. In college, I never took a painting class because I still was not interested in picking up a brush. Instead, I focused on sculpture and sculptural drawings. Coming to China changed that for me. Since my life here is temporary, I do not see the reason for sculpting since it is not easily accessible for me and is a true burden to try to ship back home. Needing a creative outlet outside of what was comfortable, I chose to paint.

I never trained in it and I couldn’t accurately get what was in my mind out without an immense amount of judgement, so I had low expectations for the first painting that was being created during this time, but at least I was getting this burst of creativity out. My colleagues encouraged me to create more, saying they were good works of art. As I painted, I kept thinking what they would mean to me. How are they connected to my life? As forms came together, I realized they were a glimpse into the way my mind works; a little bit of chaos and a little bit of logic. Just a little off center.
